Hey all – Steve here. It’s Halloween and I hope you have spent some time catching up on some of these flicks and of course, I hope you’ve been watching all of your Halloween favorites. While it doesn’t look like you will get to see our ugly mugs on a show about this top 10, I wanted to bring you our lists, and of course our consensus list! Let’s get to it!
10. The Devils Rejects
We start off with something for the hardcore horror fan. The best part about this one is that if you loved it when it first came out you’ll likely still love it today. Some people call it Rob Zombie’s best. What do you think?
9. Bride of Frankenstein
As we get into single digits, we have one from quite a long time ago. A lot of things have happened since the mid-’30s and apparently one of them is Bride of Frankenstein withstanding the test of time. It is no surprise that Bride of Frankenstein is heralded as one of Hollywood’s best-ever sequels: it does everything a good sequel should. It advances the story, brings back the characters, and casts them in a fresh and clever new light. It only made 2 of our lists, but this deserves to be on this list.
8. Halloween 2
I get this one being on this list, but it just didn’t do it for me. I thought it was a bad sequel to a good movie and I much prefer the 2018 Halloween. I just felt this one goes off the deep end a bit. That’s just how it is sometimes.
7. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter
This one is a brutal but entertaining installment for Jason. That’s all we really need from a horror flick, right? The story is important, but the missing plot points in these kinds of horror flicks are typically forgiven – and if they aren’t, then we are you even watching? Watching in 2021 will likely result in more laughs than if you watched it back in the day, but this one deserves to be here.
6. Dawn of the Dead
ALrighty – we have arrived at the Top 5! A very worthy follow-up to the original. This one does a great job and has the violence you seek around this time of year. It was Zack Snyder’s feature film debut and it was a really good debut. Was it Snyder’s best film? Some think so.
5. A Quiet Place 2
I was late to the party when it came to A Quiet Place. The sequel? Almost as scary and intense as the original and that is exactly what we are looking for in a good horror sequel, right? These flicks are full of anxiety and, for me, nerve-wracking throughout. This one lost nothing from the original as it moved forward. Great flick.
4. Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
Some will argue that this one is the best of the franchise. The dream sequences are pretty damn outstanding and some of the images from those nightmares might be stuck in your mind these days. Also, let’s just say that a mental hospital setting is always a good thing for a horror flick. Don’t get mad – it is what it is.
3. Evil Dead 2
Top 3 time. This one is the original on steroids. Scares, gore, and comedy are all apparent and this one is one of those joyful horror flicks if you will. The acting is just bad enough to make this one a blast. Great comedic timing throughout. If you haven’t seen this one yet, please make that adjustment.
2. Aliens
And the oooooh so close award goes to…
In what might be one of the instances in which the sequel is better than the original, we have Aliens coming in as the runner-up on this horror sequel list. Sigourney Weaver is outstanding in this one and she is ready to take on these aliens while making Sly Stallone look like a cartoon character. It’s a white-knuckle adventure that might include some of the best suspense ever.
- Scream 2
Look, if you loved the original I don’t see a reason you wouldn’t love this one. It seems to be the perfect horror sequel. Wes Craven was seemingly born to direct this kind of material, eh? So…do movies really cause people to act violently?
