Robin Wright is a fantastic actress. You remember her from the evilest of roles in Forrest Gump 27 years ago as Jennay, right? Yes, I did say 27 years. She’s also been in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), Wonder Woman, and Wonder Woman 1984. And how can we mention Robin Wright without mentioning the amazing House of Cards? After seeing the trailer for Land, the question was – can she carry a movie and do it “Castaway” style? And, oh, by the way, this was her directorial debut. Well, let’s discuss.

Wright plays Edee, I woman with so much pain in her mind due to a terrible tragedy that has taken place. She feels guilty and even suicidal. She sees a therapist and discusses how it is difficult to be around people because people just want you to feel better. Sometimes feeling better is just not possible at the moment and you have to get away. Well, Edee gets away in a big way – total isolation in a cabin where she goes to live off the land. To say she runs into problems is an understatement but thankfully, she is able to make a new friend along the way.

Her new friend, Miguel (Demian Bichir), helps to take care of her. He is there as someone to talk to and someone to help her through what she is going through. He teaches her to hunt and to fish so that she can survive on her own as she wants to do. The two have nice chemistry together and they don’t always realize that they need each other and thankfully, they met each other.

Land is a drama-filled flick that uses some amazing backgrounds and scenes out of Canada. The cinematography is just outstanding. You are able to feel the grief that both Edee and Miguel are feeling. The acting is pretty damn good throughout this one and Wright has to get that done alone in a good portion of the movie. The fact that Wright did such a great job acting and directing in this one is a sign of good things to come. This is a quick-moving one with a run time of right around 88 minutes, so more than worth the watch.

The Verdict
