When you see a flick or a TV show about someone that is seeking vengeance on people for some of the really bad things they have done to people, it kind of makes you think of the Showtime series, Dexter. In this one, the first thing I thought of was a female version of Dexter, which is pretty damn cool. The difference here is that Dexter was born that way, and Cassie (Carrie Mulligan) had a moment in her life that flipped the switch for her.

Cassie is clearly not right in the head. Nobody that does what she does can be. She plans these things out and keeps track of everything she does. As is stated in the trailer, Cassie goes out once a week and pretends to be very drunk and easy prey. Every week a “nice guy” offers to help her and when the inevitable happens, she pounces. Think about it – she was once in med school but dropped out and now treats her “patients” a little differently than she would have as a doctor.

A familiar face walks into the coffee shop that Cassie works in and this is where the story gets kicked into high gear. Here is where we start to learn some of the why behind her story and the life she chose to lead. Her character is fantastic as she is this mix of darkness and charming all wrapped up into one. There is some comedy in this one, but then you are reminded with every tick mark in her book, that is deadly serious.

This might be the most unique flick I’ve seen all year. There is a mix of several different genres and it continues a trend of the audience potentially rooting for the bad guy/gal in a flick or TV series. The writing is very well done and the acting is top-notch. There will be some divisiveness regarding the 3rd act and I can’t wait to hear your take! You will see some familiar faces in Bo Burnham, Clancy Brown, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Molly Shannon, Alison Brie, and more. Emerald Fennell directs this one to greatness and she also produces along with Margot Robbie (a friend of PopCulturePros.com). If you love watching bad-ass women in really good flicks, check this one out when you can.
