As 2020 starts, it is time for the first review of the new decade in Like a Boss starring Tiffany Haddish & Rose Byrne. The premise of the movie is pretty straight forward as the two main leads star as Mia Carter (Haddish) & Mel Paige (Byrne) who have been best friends since they were young. Every major moment that has happened to them has been experienced together (good or bad) which you see right from the start establishing their close friendship. They are the owners of their own beauty company that makes fresh and innovative cosmetic products that are very popular. The company itself is going through a rough patch financially as they are almost $500,000 dollars in debt despite the success that they are having.

For reasons explained in the movie they have two different views on how to get out of this debt and save their company. That is when the cosmetics mogul Claire Luna played by Salma Hayek comes in with an amazing offer to help save Mia & Mel’s company. Salma Hayek is one of those actresses who is not afraid to make fun of herself and had so much fun being in this movie. At times it was a little ridiculous but still funny nonetheless.

The story itself is a sweet one especially if you have a close friend who is like a brother/sister to you as one can understand the ups and downs of that kind of relationship. Other types of comedies like this have similar beats and choices made by the characters in the story, but it’s the chemistry of Haddish and Byrne that keeps the audience entertained and invested. In addition to the main cast, recognition needs to be delivered to the supporting characters in the movie. Billy Porter (Pose, AHS), Natasha Rothwell (Insecure, SNL), and Jennifer Coolidge all bring the best comedic (and dramatic when needed) chops that help bring the laughs. The New Year has started off a little slow with film as there are a lot of holiday releases that are finally getting wide releases. But Like a Boss is a fun comedy about close friendship that will always triumph, even in business. With many laugh out loud moments that don’t fall flat or are not too stuffed into the narrative, it’s a fun comedy to check out. Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne show why they have some of the best comedic timing in the business as it is on full display in this movie.

The Verdict
