by Steve Farace,
It’s been 84 years since the first Borat flick. I might be exaggerating a bit, as it has only actually been around 14 years. Still, it’s been a long 14 years and the use of the accent has not gone away – talk about some longevity! In my house, the “What is this? Cheese.” can be used at any time and in any place. Everything that Borat said in the original movie is 100% quotable and so many people were excited when they heard about this one.
One of the bigger questions surrounding Borat Subsequent Moviefilm was whether or not Borat would continue to “go there”. How extreme would he be in this one? Would the “me too” movement have an impact on what Borat would say or do? Would anything be off-limits? How much of a joke would he turn Covid-19 into? Well, I can now provide you with a response and let you know that he’s the same Borat that we know and love and nothing is really off-limits.
The moviefilm starts off by talking about the “great success” that took place 14 years ago. Borat was referring to the original film but also spoke about how it was not such a great success for his home country of Kazakhstan. In fact, he spent the last 14 years in prison for it. There are clear issues when a country has to cancel its annual Running of the Jew in which they celebrate the heroes who ran the concentration camps. He also mentions that the US and A has been ruined by an evil leader. It may or may not be whom you are thinking of.
All right, let’s get to the meat and potatoes of the story. Since Kazakhstan was shamed after the original movie, Borat is sent to the US and A to give a special gift to Michael Pence. The gift? A sexy monkey by the name of Johnny the monkey – were you expecting something else? I sure wasn’t – what a concept! Borat sets out on his journey to the US and A and says goodbye to his friends and family ahead of his 22-hour trip.
I won’t go into any more detail because you all know how much I hate spoilers. I will say that the jokes about women in his country continue in this one. Please don’t be offended, it’s Borat. The jokes about Jewish people are still around. Seeing as though the story revolves around a gift for Michael Pence, you can imagine that there are many political jokes throughout the film, with mentions of Obama, Trump. Pence, Jeffrey Epstein, and (hold on to your seat) Rudy Guiliani. You may or may not have heard what happened with the Guiliani scene, but be ready for that one. You’ll also get to experience what it’s like to text via fax.
I want you to also keep in mind that all this is happening as a global pandemic is beginning to take hold in the US and A. If you are a fan of Borat, you know not to take any of this seriously. He’s over-the-top. That’s it. That’s the joke. Sacha Baron Cohen is great again and it was such a relief to hear he was doing another one after he “retired” Borat in 2007 because of his popularity and inability to fly under the radar. There is vulgar language, nudity, and just straight-up inappropriate scenes and it is all magnificent. Check this one out when it hits Amazon Prime on Friday, October 23rd without hesitation.
