Biggest Risers

New York Rangers #2 (previously #5) – As the team starts to get healthy and is not having to shuffle the roster as much, we saw what they are capable of this week. Am I crazy for having them at 2? NO CHANCE. Boston has clearly been the best team in the east this year, which goes without saying. On paper, this may be the one team in the east that can really give them trouble. A strong defensive group an All-World Goaltender and an offense that can just keep coming at you in WAVES. During their 5-0-1 week, they outscored opponents 26-8 (average 3 more goals per game than their opponents).

Colorado Avalanche #6 (previously #9) – Another team starting to round into form as the playoffs approach. They were the only team this week to Win every game they had going 5-0-0. They still don’t have Landeskog, Manson, Johnson, or Lehkonen back yet but they are expected to get at least a few of these guys back come playoff time.

Calgary Flames #18 (previously #21) – While losing half the games you had does not usually justify a move up in the power rankings getting 6 of 8 possible points this week certainly does. Especially when talking about a team fighting for their playoff lives from here on out. The offense seems to finally be coming around scoring 20 goals over their 4 games this week. Now if only the defense and Goaltending could hold up.

Vancouver Canucks #19 (previously #22) Look they’re not making the playoffs and I still have a ton of questions about how the team is run from the front office. With that said it’s hard to discount what the new coaching staff has done. An impressive 4-1-0 week with wins against the playoff-bound Stars and Kings makes me believe this team won’t be a pushover down the stretch.

Biggest Fallers

Carolina Hurricane #8 (previously #2) – A lot can change in a week. Superstar winger Andrei Svechnikov has been lost for the remainder of the season with a Torn ACL. This is a catastrophic loss. He was 3rd on the team in points and played the 3rd most minutes of any non-Defensemen on the team. They had some depth but a loss of this caliber is just hard to overcome especially when looking at the depth of the teams around them (New Jersey, Boston, and New York). Losses to Vegas, New Jersey, and Toronto this week and having to go to OT against the Flyers. They will still skate into the playoffs but it’s going to be an uphill battle for them to walk away with Lord Stanley’s Cup.

Ottawa Senators #22 (previously #18) – How quickly a bad week can change a team’s outlook this time of the season. A week ago, I thought this young up-and-coming team was ready to turn a corner and make a push for one of those last wild card spots in the east. Then they went 0-4-1 (yes, WINLESS) this week. I still like this team’s long-term outlook beyond this year but now back 7 points in the standings with 13 to play it just may be too much to overcome.

Los Angeles Kings #10 (previously #7) – Without Kevin Fiala, since March 9th the Kings have gone 2-0-2. This isn’t bad but losing games to the predators and Canucks is not something you want to see from a team of this caliber at this time of year.

Other teams with notes

Nashville Predators- #21 (previously #19) – The story of this team going on a tear after being the biggest sellers of the trade deadline was a fun one. Unfortunately, it looks like reality has finally come back around. A team that was already missing Ryan Johansen, Filip Forsberg, Juuso Parsanen, and Alexander Carrier has now lost its leader Roman Josi. The extent of the Josi injury is unknown but he did not travel with the team to New York for their Sunday blowout 7-0 loss to the Rangers. Still only 5 points back between selling off big pieces and the injuries it’s really hard to see a path for them to make their way into the playoffs with all the obstacles facing them.

Tampa Bay Lighting #9 (previously #10) – This was a team that easily could have gotten a bigger push up the rankings this week. They had a strong 4-2-0 week and seem to be getting it back together after their worst stretch in a decade. Big deadline pickup Tanner Jeannot still hasn’t really gotten going for them but if the team starts winning like this no one is going to be worried about that.

I hope everyone enjoys these pieces. Please if you have questions, suggestions, or feedback please feel free to send those in!
